SLR Magic ANAMORPHOT-CINE 2x & 1.33x Lens Sets

As a commitment to the film industry, SLR Magic developed the SLR Magic ANAMORPHOT-CINE lenses to deliver the classic contrast, distortion, chromatic, color aberration, and flare characteristics of vintage anamorphic lenses, but with the convenience of a matched lens set without the hassle of aligning and matching lenses to the already popular SLR Magic Rangefinder with Anamorphot adapter combination.

To achieve the much loved scope aspect ratio, which gives a very pleasant, epic effect, filmmakers must crop off the top and bottom of standard 16:9 footage when using spherical lenses with modern digital cameras. As a result, 25% or more sensor/negative information is discarded.

This 2x anamorphic lens help filmmakers to maximize their image quality by preventing this loss of vertical resolution. The unique 2x squeeze factor uses the entire 4:3 sensor/negative area to achieve the desired 2.66:1 aspect ratio. The SLR Magic ANAMORPHOT-CINE 2x does this by compressing a 100% wider field of view to fit the width of the 4:3 sensor/negative without compressing image height.

The SLR Magic ANAMORPHOT-CINE 2x create a unique “artifact” such as horizontal lens flare, commonly referred to as anamorphic streaks, and may create slightly elongated bokeh. Over the history of cinema, these same stylish effects have contributed to the cinematic “look” of epic motion picture photography. Characteristics that shape this anamorphic “look” come from “front-mounted” anamorphic designs such as the SLR Magic Anamorphot while “rear-mounted” anamorphic designs have more suppressed anamorphic characteristics.

The SLR Magic ANAMORPHOT-CINE 2x lenses will be available for viewing at: The IBC show in Amsterdam, Netherlands from September 11-15 in the Atomos booth in Hall 9 Stand D.25 and in the Convergent Design booth in Hall 11 Stand A.38

The New SLR Magic 50mm T0.95 HyperPrime CINE and SLR Magic Rangefinder CINE Adapter

United Kingdom (June 3rd, 2015) - SLR Magic is pleased to announce two new additions to our range of cine products, the 50mm T0.95 HyperPrime CINE Lens and the Rangefinder CINE Adapter.

The 50mm HyperPrime CINE lens is designed exclusively for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount cameras, Blackmagic, Panasonic and Olympus. 100mm (35mm equiavlency) focal length offers many new creative possibilities, in particular in the fields of portrait and documentary cinematography. An ultra-fast maximum aperture of T0.95 makes the SLR Magic 50mm CINE ideal for low light photography. As usual with all our lenses, the lens is has integrated aperture and focus gearing and a silent, “clickless” aperture ring. Manufactured to meet the demands of professional photographers and cinematographers with its solid anodised finish and precision manufacture.

The SLR Magic Rangefinder CINE Adapter is an optical device with integrated follow-focus gearing. When attached to a compatible taking lens, one could override the focus control of the taking lens with the Rangefinder’s focus ring. It provides calibrated focus markings from 3’6 ft (1.1M) to Infinity. The Rangefinder CINE Adapter is recommended for user wishing to have single focus capability on the SLR Magic Anamorphot adapter (currently the 1.33x50 and the 2x50). Furthermore it can be used to create authentic cinema like manual focus capabilities on auto-focus lenses.

Both the SLR Magic 50mm T0.95 HyperPrime CINE lens and the Rangefinder CINE Adapter will be available from resellers at the end of Q3 with a MSRP’s of £849 / €1189 and £529 / €739 respectively.

PRESS RELEASE

The New SLR Magic APO HyperPrime CINE 50mm T2.1 Lens

United Kingdom (September 12th, 2014) - SLR Magic will present a new CINE lens to the public from the APO-HyperPrime lens family in the upcoming Photokina 2014 fair in Cologne at the SLR Magic booth (Hall 5.1, L-011).

The SLR Magic APO-HyperPrime CINE 50mm T2.1 is the first lens of the family. It achieves outstanding images under challenging lighting conditions.

When taking pictures with many image-dominant, open light sources, it is common for correction defects to show up. However, because the SLR Magic APO-HyperPrime CINE 50mm T2.1 is an apochromatic (APO) lens, longitudinal chromatic aberrations are corrected by its unique optical design and selection of optical elements. The colour defects are therefore significantly lower than the defined limits. Bright / dark transitions in the image, and especially highlights, are rendered with no colourful artifacts. Thanks to the low level of longitudinal chromatic aberration, there are no visible aberrations. So an illuminated portrait scene by night with many light sources in front of and behind the actual focal plane appears close to reality, without displaying complementary, colour contrast edges.

The superior performance delivered by the SLR Magic APO-HyperPrime CINE 50mm T2.1 is consistent for all shooting distances. Its high performance with an open aperture also makes this lens a great choice for portraits or close-ups.

Features a completely new optical and mechanical design, which has been developed to take into account the special and increasing demands of high-resolution cameras including those with 4K and 6K sensors.

The APO-HyperPrime CINE lens series comes standard in PL mount and can be easily adapted to numerous camera systems. Optional mount adapters will include PL-mFT adapter, PL-E adapter, and EF mount conversion adapter. The lenses all feature a standard focus rotation angle of 300 degrees and uniform measurements. This combination makes the lenses ideally suited for professional cinematography.

As a continued dedication to anamorphic lenses, some of the lenses in the APO-HyperPrime CINE lens family would be compatible with the SLR Magic 1.33x 50 Anamorphot adapter.

SLR Magic plans to exhibit the first lens of its PL cinema series at the Photokina, Cologne 16th to 21st September 2014. The SLR Magic stand is located in Hall 5.1, Booth L-011.

SLR Magic will start shipping the APO-HyperPrime CINE 50mm T2.1 in early 2015. Pricing to be confirmed at a later date.

PRESS RELEASE

The New SLR Magic 10mm T2.1 HyperPrime CINE and SLR Magic 77mm ND 0.4-1.8 ND Filter

United Kingdom (September 4th, 2014) - SLR Magic is pleased to announce the 10mm T2.1 HyperPrime Cine Lens which expands the line-up of the popular HyperPrime portfolio of lenses and the complimentary 77mm 0.4-1.8 ND filter.

An ultra wide angle lens which open up many new creative possibilities, particular suited to architectural, interior and landscape photography and cinematography.

Designed exclusively for the Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount, it offers a 20mm focal length in 35mm format equivalency. Like all the HyperPrimes the 10mm has an ultra fast maximum aperture of T2.1, ideal for low-light photography and cinematography. For cinematographers in particular this is a delight with the integration of aperture and focus gearing and a silent “clickless” aperture ring.

As usual with SLR Magic lenses, it has been designed to meet the demands of professional photographers and cinematographers with its solid anodised finish and precision manufacture.

Additionally we have our new SLR Magic 77 ND 0.4-1.8 ND filter. A solid variable neutral density filter providing a reduction of about 1.3 to 6 stops. The 0.4 to 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring via the non-removable lever. By slowing your exposure time you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Both filter substrates are combined into one filter ring, giving this filter a low profile to eliminate vignetting on most lenses. The front filter ring diameter is 86mm in diameter, further reducing the likelihood of vignetting on wide angles lenses such as the SLR Magic 10mm T2.1 HyperPrime CINE lens.

The SLR Magic 10mm T2.1 HyperPrime CINE lens will be available from resellers at the end of October 2014 with a MSRP of £699 / €869. The complimentary SLR Magic will be available from October 2014 with a MRSP of £149 / £189.

25mm T.95 HyperPrime Cine Lens Updated!

We have now introduced a new mark II version of the popular SLR Magic 25mm T0.95 HyperPrime Cine Lens. Optically it is identical to the mark I version but with essential mechanical strengthening. This is solely due to the likely use with our Anamorphot 1.33x 50 anamorphic adapter (also diopters) which normally would require lens support with its use. However due to the increase load capacity of the mark II lens it allows the use of the Anamorphot with out lens support being required.

PRESS RELEASE

The New SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x 50 Anamorphic Adapter

United Kingdom (February 10th, 2014) - SLR Magic is pleased to announce the introduction of the Anamorphot 1.33x 50 anamorphic adapter.

In the past, many indie filmmakers who wanted to shoot anamorphic had to depend on rare vintage lenses, which were not always reliable. In hopes to provide a reliable and available solution for indie anamorphic shooters, we had active feedback from professional users.

To achieve the much loved 2.35:1 scope aspect ratio, (which gives a pleasant, epic effect) filmmakers must crop the top and bottom of standard 16:9 footage when using spherical lenses with modern digital cameras. As a result, 25% of sensor / negative information is discarded.

As a commitment to the film industry, SLR Magic developed this 1,33x anamorphic adapter to help filmmakers maximize image quality by preventing this loss of vertical resolution. The unique 1,33x squeeze factor uses the entire 16:9 sensor / negative area to achieve the desired 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The Anamorphot 1.33x – 50 does this by compressing a 33% wider field of view to fit the width of the 16:9 sensor / negative without compressing image height.

Modern professional cinema cameras have large sensors capable of capturing an image in the 2.35:1 format directly, using spherical lenses, but film makers still desire the anamorphic “look” which often limits them to using rare vintage lenses. These present a number of difficulties in practice such as size, weight, lack of close focus, availability, and high price. We sought to overcome such issues with the SLR Magic Anamorphot.

The SLR Magic Anamorphot 1,33x – 50 create a unique "artifact" such as horizontal lens flare, commonly referred to as anamorphic streaks, and may create slightly elongated bokeh when achromatic diopters are used. Over the history of cinema, these same stylish effects have contributed to the cinematic "look" of epic motion picture photography. Characteristics that shape this anamorphic “look” come from “front-mounted” anamorphic adapter designs such as the SLR Magic Anamorphot while “rear-mounted” anamorphic designs have more suppressed anamorphic characteristics.

Additionally we have launched the SLR Magic 77mm Achromatic Diopter Set (+0.33, +1.3) specifically designed for use with our anamorphic adapter.

Both products will be available late March 2014. Pricing: Anamorphot 1.33x 50 adapter - £749 (€899). Achromatic diopter set - £249 (€299).

Technical Information

SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x – 50

Lens Type: Anamorphic adapter

Objective front filter thread: Φ77

Objective rear filter thread: Φ62, Φ58, Φ52, Φ49

Lens Coating: Multi Coated

Close Focus: dependent on taking lens compatibility

Weight (oz./g): 13.4/380

Optional accessories: SLR Magic 77mm Achromatic Diopter Set (+0.33, +1.3)

Suggested taking lens based on sensor size:

17-85mm focal length can be used for S16 sensor.

20-85mm focal length can be used for MFT sensor.

35-85mm focal length can be used for S35 and APS-C sensor.

40-85mm focal length can be used for Full Frame sensor.

Taking lens compatibility

Lenses with non-rotating front filter threads must be used. The front element of the taking lens should be as close to the rear element of the SLR Magic Anamorphot 1,33x – 50 as possible without making contact. It isn't necessary for the taking lens to have an internal focusing mechanism. Trial and error will be involved but, in general, the SLR Magic Anamorphot is best paired with a prime lens whose front element (not to be confused with its filter thread) is smaller than 50mm in diameter.
